Currant, Black – Ribes nigrum

Currant, Black – Ribes nigrum

Perennial from zone 4 – 8. Can grow to about 1.8 metres (or 6 feet). Easy to grow and productive plant with black berries, eaten raw or cooked and used in jams and pies. Berry has a musky flavor when eaten raw, so it might be preferred when cooked and sweetened. Leaves can be used in soups or teas.

Soil: Prefers moist but well drained soils. Suitable for sandy, loamy, or clay soils.

Sun: Plant in full sun to assure good berry production, but part sun or dappled sun may be sufficient.
