Currant, Red – Ribes rubrum

Perennial to zone 5. Grows to about 1.2 metres (or 4 feet). Easy to grow and productive plant with red berries, eaten raw or cooked and used in jams and pies. Leaves contain hydrogen cyanide so should not be eaten. Plant on the sunny edge of a woodland garden.

 

Soil: Prefers moist but well drained soils. Suitable for sandy, loamy, or clay soils.

 

Sun: Plant in full sun to assure good berry production, but part sun or dappled sun may be sufficient.
